Comox Valley Stroke Recovery Group

Cost Yearly membership of $30.00 - $20.00 to SRABC, $10.00 to the Branch.
Who Can Attend?
  • Branch programs are for stroke survivors living in the community and their caregivers.
  • Stroke survivors must be capable of participating meaningfully in the program.
  • Stroke survivors must be independent in feeding, mobility, toileting and personal hygiene or have a caregiver accompany them who can provide the necessary assistance.
  • We do not have the resources to accommodate people who have significant behavioural problems such as aggressive/challenging behaviour, sexual inappropriateness, or destructive tendencies.

Typical Program Day

The following programs are delivered at the Comox Branch:

– Brain stimulating activity, jigsaw puzzles etc 10:00-10:30 am,

Physical activity i.e., exercise, games, Tai Chi etc. 10:30-11:00am

– snack and socializing 11:00am

-finish with a speaker, roundtable or topic of interest

At times the coordinator organizes a speaker, entertainment or music therapy programming.

A summer barbeque, a Christmas potluck and an outing are held every year.

There are a few games i.e., bocce ball, some paper resources (mental aerobics)

Nanaimo Stroke Recovery Branch

10:45 – 11:00 am – Social activities & announcements

11:00 – 11:30 am – Exercise

11:30 – 12:00 pm  –  3 Options:

– Speech and Caregivers groups

–  Walk around the park

–  Exercise

12:00 – 12:45 pm  – Lunch (Bring your own bag lunch)

12:45 – 2:00 pm – Speaker/Entertainment

Typical Program Day

The following programs are delivered at the Cowichan Valley Branch:

1st Friday of the month is Identity Reconstruction After Stroke. This is education on understanding the effects of a stroke on people’s identities, advocacy, and education awareness on rehabilitation.

2nd Friday of the month is Building Tools for Living After Stroke

3rd Friday of the month is Brain Fitness (cognitive exercises for the right side of the brain, for the left side of the brain, and then the whole brain).

4th Friday of the month is Health Promotion. This covers nutrition, exercises, accessing community resources, and healthy lifestyles.

Each meeting starts off with social networking.
