Kamloops Stroke Recovery Branch

Who Can Attend?
  • Branch programs are for stroke survivors living in the community and their caregivers.
  • Stroke survivors must be capable of participating meaningfully in the program.
  • Stroke survivors must be independent in feeding, mobility, toileting and personal hygiene or have a caregiver accompany them who can provide the necessary assistance.
  • We do not have the resources to accommodate people who have significant behavioural problems such as aggressive/challenging behaviour, sexual inappropriateness, or destructive tendencies.

Typical Program Day

The following programs are delivered at the Kamloops Branch:

-Coffee/ Check In/ branch news, etc (30 min)

-Exercises ( 30 min)

-Activity (craft/art project/guest speaker (30-60 minutes)

-Lunch & Goodbyes/info (30 minutes)

Lunch is not provided, please bring your own bagged lunch.  Coffee, tea and light snack provided.

Exercise Program

-Coordinator delivers the program, trained in Nia (Neuromuscular Integrative Action), Nia involves cardiovascular aerobic exercise and whole-body conditioning.

Kelowna Stroke Recovery Branch

The Rehab yoga is provided by a licensed yoga therapist. Aside from guest speakers or entertainment, Rachel (an SLP) provides all the other programming.

EXERICSE PROGRAM

30 minute Coordinator led program.

COMMUNICATION PROGRAM

Combination of using bungalow software, individual sessions, and group activities. Lead by the Coordinator (SLP), 30-60 minutes at each meeting.

The following programs are delivered at the Vernon Branch:

-Arrival and socializing (30 minutes) $1.00 for coffee

-Exercises – Coordinator leads an exercise adaptable program (30 – 40minutes)

– Branch news and planning and stroke related info

-Remaining 60 minutes varies from week to week and may focus on memory, speech, coordination or other effects of stroke and may involve individual or group activities or a guest speaker

A facilitated separate caregiver meeting on a different day is in the planning stages and may be available after March 1, 2014.
